Learn About SmarterDent

Rosecrans, GregoryLet me introduce myself: I am Greg Rosecrans, a dentist with a very successful private practice in the Great Lakes Bay Region. I have enjoyed my solo practice for over twenty years now. Recently I learned how to make a major savings in my costs of operation. I am suggesting you take a few minutes to read my story below. I know you will discover a smart (and easy) way to reduce the expenses of operating your private practice.

A couple of years ago, a colleague explained to me he had been diagnosed with “essential tremors.” This was seriously slowing him down and he needed time to keep his practice going and still find time to sell his solo practice. Could I help him out a couple days a week, so he could transition his practice to another dentist?

I thought things over carefully. He had a very busy practice, so there would be ample work. And he had a CEREC milling machine. Since I had passed my CEREC class years back and it was evident he was working close to capacity, I stepped in to help my colleague.

I was not comfortable in the beginning. From practicing solo over twenty years, I was stepping into a completely different practice with new surroundings, new patients, and new staff. Topping off matters, I am left handed and all the units were right handed. But any discomfort grew into challenge, and I found doing CEREC crowns, working my practice four days a week, and helping my colleague two days a week was turning out to be pretty exciting. I was very busy, but also very satisfied. I had no idea all this would open the door to considerable operational savings in my own practice.

Eventually, my colleague sold his practice, but not to another solo dentist. He sold to Corporate Dentistry. And Corporate Dentistry wanted to keep me on, thinking it would be a seamless transition. Since I was managing my own practice well and had grown accustomed to working the extra hours, I dove head first into Corporate Dentistry.

Now the plot thickens for this left-handed dentist in a right-handed Corporate Practice. I soon discovered firsthand there were tremendous differences between solo dentistry and Corporate Dentistry. Some differences I could not understand at all and others rapidly earned my respect. And the one I respected the most was the way Corporate Dentistry saved money due to volume. Accounting services, web design, technology, software, hardware, and legal services were all heavily discounted due to volume of work. Well, I may be busy, but I am not stupid. I started SMARTDENT, LLC.

SMARTDENT groups solo dental practitioners together in order to increase the volume of work needed to realize discounts like those Corporate Dentistry enjoys. Those in SMARTDENT, LLC are working together to help control costs and to realize savings—and not long-range savings—savings now. In the first six months of 2015, I saved over $10,000 off my lab bill. The average SMARTDENT member realizes a 17-20% decrease in cost of dental supplies. And the Carestream 3500 becomes available at huge savings.
